Silvoarable Agroforstfläche der Hochschule Weihenstephan-Triesdorf
For teaching, research, and demonstration purposes, an agroforestry area will be established in 2023 on a university-owned site near Freising for HSWT. The planting is part of the joint project REKLINEU (Regional Pathways to Climate-Neutral Universities). The Faculty of Sustainable Agricultural and Energy Systems and the Faculty of Forestry and Forest Management are involved in the planting and management of the tree strips.
In spring 2023, 480 poplars were planted, as well as a perennial planting with bugbane, goatsbeard, coneflower, mallows, and cup plant. In autumn, two additional strips will be planted with valuable trees such as wild service tree, wild cherry, walnut, and sycamore maple, partly combined with the poplars in short rotation. Additionally, native, fast-growing trees such as grey alder or elm are planted in the mid-rotation areas.
The goal of the new area is its use in teaching and research on numerous issues. The investigation contents are in particular the permanent enrichment of CO2 from the atmosphere in soil and biomass as well as the change of the microclimate. Further observations include biodiversity, erosion reduction, and water retention.
