As part of the "agroforestry" joint research project of the University of Freiburg (Baden-Württemberg), Prof. H. Spiecker (Institute for Forest Growth) created an example area for agroforestry. In order to be able to give an impression of the combined use within the short duration of the research project, three existing plots were converted. Tree planting: 1997, Conversion to agroforestry: 2005, New design: cherry as a deciduous tree (origin Liliental) in row spacing of 15 m x 15 m with conventional agricultural use (winter wheat), Size: approx. 2,250 m², 4 rows of which are cherry trees, Background: The high-value deciduous tree demonstration area Breisach "Stockfeld" was established in 1997. The broad-leaved tree wide-distance planting is intended to demonstrate the possibility of establishing broad-leaved trees for the production of valuable wood in a comparatively extensive manner with fewer plants, compared to classical afforestations (with up to 4,000 trees/ha).
