On the premises of the company Good Food Syndicate, a multifunctional agroforestry system for climate adaptation with various chestnut fruit-yielding varieties was established in February 2023. The selected area is one hectare of arable land, mainly used for growing potatoes, and is characterized by drought and heat stress. Despite the gentle slope, signs of erosion have already been documented.

The rows of trees are intended to support the efforts of the farm managers in building soil fertility. They act as a windbreak and contribute to stabilizing the microclimate through shading and the evapotranspiration of the drought-tolerant trees. The woody structures interrupt runoff channels, increase the soil's water absorption capacity, and thereby prevent soil erosion.

A mixture of 54 chestnut varieties was planted, which, due to a special root training and planting method, will show long-term resilience against drought. The proven varieties are pest-resistant, and with good care, a first significant harvest can be expected after five years. The planting included the necessary above- and below-ground protection measures against hares, deer, and voles, which are regularly observed in the areas. In addition, coconut fiber mulch mats were used, which suppress weed growth in the first years and reduce the necessary soil cultivation measures.
