Geflügelauslauf mit Pappeln und Wertholzbäumen
In May 2025, a silvopastoral agroforestry system featuring hybrid poplars and high-value timber trees was established on an approximately 2-hectare site at Gänsepeter in Rommerskirchen. The goal is to enhance the structural and functional quality of the outdoor grazing areas for free-range poultry (particularly geese and chickens). In addition to enhancing the visual appeal of the area, the primary focus is on providing shade for the grazing areas to improve animal welfare during summer heat stress.
A total of 625 poplar cuttings were planted in four double-row strips of trees. The cuttings (150–180 cm, supplied by Lignovis) were mechanically planted directly behind a deep-tilling plow at a depth of approximately 50–60 cm. Planting distances vary between 1.5 and 2 meters. Between the rows of trees are 20.5-meter-wide strips of farmland—normally used to grow corn for the geese—which will change in the future.
The wood chips will eventually be utilized in a planned on-site wood chip heating system.
In the fall of 2025, one strip will be supplemented with approximately 33 valuable timber trees such as serviceberries, sessile oaks, and sycamore maples.
