In 2006, an agroforestry system combining viticulture with oak and poplar trees was established on a steep slate slope in the municipality of Ayl. The oak and poplar trees were planted alongside Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling grapevines. The project is being scientifically researched and monitored by the Universities of Freiburg and Hohenheim.
