Agroforstsystem Stolzenhagen, Modellprojekt der Nationalparkstiftung Unteres Odertal
In the fall of 2020, the National Park Foundation established an agroforestry plantation of high-value timber trees on 6 hectares of farmland directly adjacent to the Lower Oder Valley National Park as a demonstration project. The land is managed by a conventional local farm. Once the trees have become established, normal farming operations will resume on the land; the spacing between the rows of trees has been adapted to the working widths of the agricultural equipment.
Implementation: 4 rows of trees with a total length of 900 m and 62 trees
Tree species: climate-resilient valuable timber trees (chestnut 44, hazel 7, wild service tree 11)
Row spacing: approx. 30 m (max. working width for agricultural equipment)
Planting distance between trees: approx. 15 m
Land area required by tree rows at 2 m width: approx. 1,800 m²
Crop type grown on arable land for 5 years: alfalfa; after 5 years, normal cultivation of the field with field crops
Agroforestry system type:
Silvoarable system (woody and arable crops incl. intercropped permanent crops)Size of agroforestry system area(s) (in ha):
6Percentage of area under trees/shrubs (in %):
5Establishment (date):
Oct 31, 2020Site specifics:
- drought / low water holding capacity
- susceptibility to erosion
Farming sectors:
- Arable farming
Tree species:
- Wild Service Tree (Sorbus torminalis / Torminalis glaberrima)
- Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa)
- Turkish Hazel (Corylus colurna)

Motivation/rationale for establishing or maintaining agroforestry system:
- establish ecological balance
- Higher productivity
- Erosion protection
- Reduce nutrient input into surface waters
- Contribution to climate protection / resilience
