Fast-growing poplars were planted in the chicken run so that the chickens would use the entire area more evenly. All previous attempts with fruit trees or scattered shrubs had failed before this. This is because chickens originally come from the forest and do not like open spaces. The poplars also provide increased protection against birds of prey and are intended to be used every 5–8 years as energy wood or bedding.
