The fast-growing poplars were planted in the outdoor runs of two laying hen houses to make better use of the outdoor space. Existing hedges were incorporated into the design, as chickens originally come from the forest and do not like open spaces. The poplars also provide increased protection against birds of prey and, after 3–5 years, can be used here for energy wood or bedding.
