The fast-growing poplars from the organic farm were planted in the chicken run so that the chickens would make more intensive use of the outdoor area and to provide protection from birds of prey. Additionally, since the farm sells its products directly to consumers, the run was designed to be just as attractive as the beautiful new wooden barn (photo from 2018). Positive results have already been achieved by using wood chips as bedding in the area near the barn. Harvesting the trees every 5–8 years fits well into this plan.
