At the Schanzenhof near Alpen on the Lower Rhine, in addition to 2.5 hectares of traditional orchards, five triple-row poplar strips were established on a total of 20 hectares of arable land – around 3,200 trees. The planting serves to protect against wind erosion and supports the improvement of soil moisture in increasingly hot and dry summers. The decisive factor was the choice of a low-maintenance, practical system that can be easily integrated into everyday farm operations. The poplars not only contribute to climate adaptation but are also used for energy purposes on the farm.
